What the numbers mean
The calculator gives you three answers. The first is the caffeine in your system right now: the sum of every drink you logged, each one decayed by the time since you had it. The second is the level at your bedtime, which is the number that actually predicts whether caffeine will cost you sleep tonight. The third is when your total falls below roughly 50mg, the residual level at which most adults stop seeing a measurable delay in falling asleep.
One practical note on timing: caffeine reaches peak blood concentration about 30 to 60 minutes after you drink it. A coffee you finished five minutes ago has not fully arrived yet, so treat the first hour as a rough estimate. Everything after that follows the decay curve closely.

Why this is a range
Most caffeine calculators hand you a single number to the decimal place. That precision is not real. The Institute of Medicine's 2001 review of caffeine pharmacology puts the mean plasma half-life in healthy adults at about 5 hours, with a reported range of 1.5 to 9.5 hours. Two people who drink the same coffee at the same time can be hours apart on when it clears, so this calculator computes every level twice, once at the fast end of your selected band and once at the slow end, and shows you both.
The factors below are the main reasons your half-life sits where it does. They are described here rather than applied automatically, because several of them are medical circumstances where a doctor or pharmacist, not a web calculator, should tell you what applies to you.
- CYP1A2 genetics
- The liver enzyme that does over 90% of the work. A common variant in the CYP1A2 gene meaningfully shifts how fast caffeine is broken down (Sachse et al., 1999), which is the single biggest reason two people react differently to the same coffee.
- Smoking
- Speeds clearance up by inducing the same enzyme, so smokers clear caffeine faster than non-smokers. Clearance returns to non-smoking rates after quitting (Institute of Medicine, 2001).
- Oral contraceptives
- Can roughly double the half-life (Institute of Medicine, 2001), which pushes an average metaboliser toward the slow end of the range.
- Pregnancy
- Raises the half-life substantially and progressively. Knutti et al. (1981) measured a mean of about 3.4 hours in non-pregnant adults against about 10.5 hours in the final weeks of pregnancy, with individual values as high as 16 hours.
- Some medications
- Drugs that inhibit CYP1A2, the antibiotic ciprofloxacin among them, slow caffeine clearance for the duration of the course. A doctor or pharmacist can tell you whether anything you take applies.

How the math works
Caffeine is eliminated by first-order kinetics, which means a fixed fraction leaves per unit of time rather than a fixed amount. Each drink decays on its own curve and the curves add together. A 200mg coffee at 9am and a 100mg tea at 2pm are two separate exponentials that are summed at whatever moment you ask about.
That summing is why stacking matters and why a single-drink calculator misleads you. The 9am coffee feels long gone by evening, but at a 7-hour half-life a quarter of it is still there at 11pm, sitting on top of everything you drank since. The decay curve in the calculator shades the whole plausible corridor between fast and slow metabolism, with your bedtime marked, so you can see where the uncertainty actually lies. On totals rather than timing: the FDA cites 400mg a day as the amount not generally associated with negative effects in healthy adults, which is roughly three to four standard cups of coffee. That is a daytime ceiling for safety, not a sleep target. For sleep, what counts is how little is left at bedtime.

How long does caffeine stay in your system?
Traces of caffeine remain for well over 24 hours, but the question that matters for sleep is when the level drops low enough to stop affecting you. Why is caffeine half-life a range instead of one number?
Because caffeine clearance depends on the liver enzyme CYP1A2, whose activity varies widely from person to person. On top of genetics, smoking speeds clearance up, while oral contraceptive use can double the half-life, pregnancy raises it from an average of about 3.4 hours to about 10.5 hours in the final weeks (Knutti et al., 1981), and some medications including the antibiotic ciprofloxacin slow it further. Liver function and age also matter. Any calculator that gives you a single mg figure to the decimal place is hiding this variation rather than accounting for it.
How much caffeine at bedtime is too much?
There is no official threshold, but the research points at a low number. Drake et al. (2013) gave people 400mg of caffeine 6 hours before bed and still measured over an hour of lost sleep, even when those people fell asleep normally and reported sleeping fine. Around 50mg of residual caffeine is the commonly used sleep-relevant line, below which most adults do not see a measurable delay in sleep onset. That is roughly half a standard cup of coffee. Does caffeine keep you awake even if you fall asleep fine?
Yes, and this is the part most people miss. Caffeine works by blocking adenosine receptors, the sensors that register accumulated sleep pressure. Blocking the signal does not remove the underlying tiredness, so you can fall asleep with caffeine on board and still lose sleep quality. Drake et al. (2013) found that caffeine 6 hours before bed cut objectively measured total sleep time by more than an hour, and the research literature consistently shows caffeine suppressing slow-wave deep sleep, the stage that drives physical recovery. Feeling sleepy is not evidence that caffeine has cleared.
Can I speed up how fast caffeine leaves my body?
Not meaningfully. Your liver clears caffeine on its own schedule and there is no reliable way to flush it out faster. Water, food, and exercise do not shorten the half-life; they may make you feel better while you wait, which is a different thing. What you can control is not adding to the total, so stopping further caffeine is the one lever that works. If you have overdone it and are dealing with a racing heart, chest discomfort, or severe anxiety, treat that as a reason to seek medical advice rather than something to wait out.
